This course reflected on modern Chinese history through Chinese films. My final paper in this course critically examines digital surveillance and artistic expression in an experimental film by a popular Chinese artist.
Below is an except from the final essay.
Contemporary Chinese Artist Xu Bing’s Dragonfly Eyes (2017) was not well-received in mainstream international theaters. Despite addressing several relevant issues in Chinese culture such as increasing surveillance and the rise of internet streaming, the film fell flat in its reception because of its basic plot line. Yet, Xu’s important commentary has remained important, especially as new methods of surveillance and streaming have appeared from both top-down and bottom-up initiatives. Through Xu Bing’s venture into filmmaking, the audience is forced to reckon with these new inventions in unnatural ways. This film, through its filmmaking techniques, addresses technological progress and how it is currently affecting society and how it might develop further into the future.
